Kopia vs Duplicacy

“Hey, here is this over engineered, feature-creepy, with no stable release, fragile monster but It’s FREE!!! Yay!”

Let’s just stay objective here. This is about simple pros/cons comparison. It does not work that way that you choose your favorite first and then discredit all the advantages of the alternative. You are a mod here so, mind your behavior.

Duplicacy advantages:

  • RSA/PKI encryption support

Kopia disadvantages:

  • Error correction (Reed-Solomon) support is currently experimental
  • No RSA/PKI support

You are a mod here so, mind your behavior.

I don’t see how is this relevant. I’m also a user with my own opinions. I’m not the only moderator, don’t worry, if I go out of line I"m sure someone will act on it.

No, not really. It’s the other way. I look at everything, and then designate one my favorite. Duplicacy is my favorite not because I"m a mod here. The casualty is reversed here.

Re: Kopia: it does not have a stable version. End of story. It’s not a contender. Any perceived advantages are therefore irrelevant. It’s still a toy to tickle its developers egos. It’s unstable. It corrupts datastore. It’s purely my experience and opinions of course, you can go and experience all that yourself.

This would be disingenuous. Duplicacy’s advantages are simplicity, stability, and lockless design, that as a side effect, allows to offer cross-machine deduplication. Erasure coding, RSA, and other gimmicks are all secondary and don’t drive decisions. Licensing terms are not even on the list of considerations. They dont’ affect absolutely anythings. hence my amusement by your original comment.

From a backup tools you want stability, robustness, and repeairability. None of that Kopia has. So no, saying that “look, it’s open source” (as if its’s a good thing in the first place) - is quite missing the point.

Sorry, I misunderstood that this forum was for Duplicacy users in general - people who may have different preferences and viewpoints - not just for you. Apologies for my childish mistake.

You expressed your opinion. I expressed mine, with justification. You got offended. And it’s somehow my fault? Ok.
