Any suggestions for S3 or SFTP storage providers? - Do S3 compatible / SFTP work reliably?

I currently use Google Drive but I am considering moving to a S3 Compatible or a SFTP storage provider.

  1. Does anyone have any feedback on how well Duplicacy works when using the S3 Compatible or SFTP storage backend? Does one work better than the other?

  2. Any suggestions for a provider of either S3 Compatible or SFTP storage servers? Hoping I can pick up a decent deal during Black Friday and want to research possible companies beforehand so I can jump on a decent deal. Maximum budget of $3/TB/month but hoping for a better deal during Black Friday.

Thanks

What do you mean by “work better than the other”?

Maximum budget of $3/TB/month

I’m seeing people mention iDrive for the pricing but I can’t speak to its quality.

As for standard S3 providers that offer “cold storage” (e.g. S3 glacier), I don’t know what Duplicacy’s access patterns look like for that-- hopefully someone else can chime in.

Are there any known issues with either S3 Compatible or SFTP storage backends? Hanging connections / failed uploads / doesn’t retry correctly?

S3 glacier

I am more focused on the S3 Compatible sector not actual S3.

I will look at iDrive S3 Compatible Storage. The heavy discounted first year puts me off a bit but certainly worth looking at further before immediately dismissing.

If anyone has any other provider suggestions or feedback when using the S3 Compatible or SFTP storage backends that would be appreciated.

Thanks

Unorganized thoughts:

  • Duplicacy does not support archival storage that has thawing requirements, so you are limited to hot-ish storage
  • 3/TB for hot storage is unrealistic. If any company offers storage cheaper – don’t use them, they are lying to you and/or cutting corners. One example of such company is iDrive that was mentioned above. Avoid them.
  • Don’t try to buy a “deal” and end up paying money for a backup you can’t rely on. Providers worth their salt don’t offer “deals”. They are already priced competitively. As a rule of thumb – if you see someone is offering you a deal – they are playing games with you you can’t win. Avoiding them in the future forever would be a good strategy. So watch for Black Friday deals and blacklist companies who offer them.
  • If you bump up your budget to $5-$6/TB – then you have a lot of good options. My personal choice is Storj. I heard good things about Wasabi. Hetzner is also popular but I cannot recommend it due to lack of sufficient experience with it.
  • One interesting example is Google Cloud Storage Archive tier – but beware extra long minimum retention charge. It may end up being more expensive than hot storage. But some folks had good experience with it, you can search the forum.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have researched Hetzner and their storage boxes (they are $3/1TB) but many posts regarding excessive KYC policies have put me off them.

I think I am after a “smaller” company that has been around for a decent period of time.

Like you mention you do have to be careful but I do not think $3/1TB is an impossible task so I am going to keep on researching.
