Backing up Duplicacy web edition ID and configuration files

Hello,

I am using duplicacy web edition installed on windows 11 pro to do back ups on external physical drives so I created a bunch of storage locations and backups IDs but I want to make sure this configurations is backed up somewhere safe in case my computer crashes and I have to reinstall windows and Duplicacy web edition on my current computer or on a new computer.

I would like to have clear instructions as to how to do that correctly because could not find anything so far or perhaps somebody knows a link where it explains the process for dummies.

Thank you

You don’t need to backup anything. It’s trivial to reinstall duplicacy and add storages and schedules back. You still need to save storage access and encryption passwords somewhere that is not on the same machine.

If you really want to save/restore state — you can copy duplicacy.json and settings.json somewhere safe.

This won’t help you in case of machine loss, because credentials there are encrypted using windows crypto api that depends on user account ID but it may help you want to revert duplicacy configuration on the same machine.

TLDR: don’t.

Thanks for the answer. I am not quite following what you said.
If I format my computer tomorrow and install a clean w11 copy and then I want to restore the files I stored in an external HDD using duplicacy then I can or can’t?
If I can it is just a matter of installing duplicacy web for windows and then copy duplicacy.json and settings.json i backed up somewhere safe inside the right folder in windows and then I will get all my configuration back and will be able to restore my files or no really?

If you storage is encrypted you need to know the password.

On a new machine you install duplicacy, add the same storage with the same password, and then restore your data.

No copying of any weird config files is needed.

I strongly recommend going though this exercise to ensure you can get your data before you actually need it.
