Browse backup or delete files from backup?

I’m backing up to B2, and I’d recently changed hypervisors. I’m wanting to remove all the VMDKs and anything relating to VMware backups from my backed up data, if that’s possible. I’m wanting replace my old VMware VM backups with their Proxmox counterparts.

I’d really rather not start over, if I can help it, because I have 13TB of data total. I know eliminating the VMware backups from that set will reduce that number a lot.

If I’m thinking about this wrong, please suggest A Better Way… I’m all :ear::ear:!!

You can’t remove individual files from a backup. You can only delete a backup as a whole (by specifying the revision number in the prune job).

If those VMDK files are mixed with other files in the same backups then there is really no way to remove VMDK files only.

Will there be any support for such a thing in the future? The idea being that one can delete files from within a backup to reclaim space if needed?

I’d also like this, but I suspect it would be hard because old snapshots reference shared chunks. For now the practical path seems to be: exclude the VMware paths going forward, keep only the revisions you still need, then prune so unreferenced chunks can disappear. If most of the 13TB is really VMware-only, a separate backup ID for the new Proxmox set might be cleaner than trying to surgically edit old snapshots.
