Safe to copy from a storage while running backup up to that storage?

I’m doing nightly backups from a NAS to an attached RAID5 array. Monthly, I copy the RAID5 storage to an external USB drive, which takes a few hours between the nightly backups. I now want to reformat the external drive from NTFS to EXT4 and re-copy the RAID5 storage, which will take several days. Is it safe to allow the copy operation to run concurrently with the nightly backups?

I do understand that I’ll need to repeat the copy between backups until it completes quickly and catches up. Thanks.

Duplicacy is fully concurrent.
